I'm the manager of a co-op (not a big national one!). When things are going well, voter turnout is not very high and elections are sometimes uncontested. We have 3 member meetings/year and write about it in our newsletter for everyone who didn't go, and over 60% of our members say they read all or most of it. ( ! )

A friend once called to tell me that he and his wife had gotten the notice about an informational meeting about an important project the members would eventually be asked to vote on. He called to say the last thing they wanted to do when they got home from work was go to an informational meeting, but that it was really important to them that they could.
