    The fact that a book written so long ago can still change people's lives is interesting in two ways:  first, the ancients do have something to teach us; and second, human nature hasn't changed very much.

    The fact that the diarist appreciates the book for its beauty is a bonus in my eyes.  I don't go for first editions or anything like that, but I do love beautiful pages, the feel of a book in my hands, even the smell of it.  

    Our diarist today cites Principle no. 3, that

    the perfected individual is a sage, free from desire and strife.
     I wonder how many of us ever reach such a state of being? :)

    Thanks for the beautiful illustration, too--it's very evocative.
