  •  I support my postal carrier. (13+ / 0-)

I respect the pony express and rural free delivery. I live in a big city suburb, lived in a bigger city  yet before. Post office service is awful. Long lines, slow service, can't find mail, supervisors watch one or two employees work instead of helping out and serving the public. I dread going and use the kiosk whenever I can. There's no express service. A simple trip can take a half hour or an hour.
Philosophically, USPS needs to stay. The usps culture needs to change IMHO.

    •  One reason (maybe the only reason) for slow (12+ / 0-)

service at your PO is that the number of employees has been drastically cut so they simply do not have the manpower to serve you faster.

at my large city post office
long lines have been a staple of the po

there are definitely efficiencies that could be made that have not

I once stood in line to pick up a package with at least a dozen other people waiting at least 45 minutes - there were two employees and one of them spent the entire 45 minutes looking for one person's package

that there are often lines at the PO. I have experienced it also. But maybe they always needed more than 2 employees to man the counter or at least have extra employees there at certain times when business is usually higher.

I have also waited in lines at department stores and grocery stores. The difference as I see it is not that people are not just as frustrated by lines at businesses, but that no one grumbles "damn inefficient businesses" when that happens but do grumble "damn inefficient government" when they have to wait at the PO. There seems to be a double standard.

          •  it's not two employees behind 'the counter' (0+ / 0-)

it's two employees behind the special counter set aside for packages
the regular counter had at least 10 more employees

this is just one example picked out at random but describes the normal way it always is. I don't think you can make a case that the post office is efficient

when there is a long line in a department store it's noteable as being exceptional

            •  Not efficient? (4+ / 0-)

I dump a little piece of paper into a metal box on a random street corner. For 46 cents, it's delivered across the country in two days.

              That's efficient.

did go on a couple of occasions. Both times, I had to wander around the store until I found a service counter that was open and then had to wait for 15 minutes or so for my turn. Whether that is usual or not, I do not know, but that has been my experience.

Also, try finding someone to answer questions at many big box stores such as Home Depot or Lowe's. There may not be a huge line at the checkout but there are few employees on the floor to help.

Again, I am sure there are inefficiencies but I rarely have had to wait at my local post office.
