The Canadian post office faced/faces many of the same issues as the USPS and has dealt with them in a somewhat different way .. and so far is doing ok.

    1. Canada Post became a crown corporation - so owned by the government but free to run its own business.
    2. Many post offices closed and instead relocated into drug stores with a kiosk (staffed by Canada Post employees)
    3. Saturday delivery ... you must be joking
    4. Home delivery in any new (last 25 years) development is to community mailboxes - roughly serving 40-50 houses per superbox (everyone has their own key and small box).
    5. Started an on-line service for bills. I can get my bills delivered electronically (ebills) to a Canada Post e-box which is linked to my on-line banking telling me when new bills have arrived, and then I can pay directly from my bank.
    6. Somehow has managed to remain close to or actually profitable despite declining mail volumes.
    7. Canada Post has been so successful that the head was recently poached by the UK's Royal Mail to run their operations.

Still even Canada Post comments that  " We are in the midst of the largest shift in the history of paper based communications ad this is causing accelerated mail volume declines "

There's room at the top they're telling you still But first you must learn how to smile as you kill If you want to be like the folks on the hill
