  •  WRONG. (5+ / 0-)

Nope.  E-mail and paperless billing aren't killing the post office.  It's not helping, sure (one reason I don't do it), but what they lose from the internet as far as paperless goes, they make up for in packages bought from online retailers... which is one of the chief ways people do their shopping nowdays.  And 97% of the mail involves businesses, governments, and non-profits, anyway - paying your bills online isn't really impacting it all that much.

What's killing off the post office is congressional tampering, mostly from Republicans who are taking payoffs from FedEx and UPS to do it.

Starting in 2006, there was legislation requiring the post office to pre-fund future retirement benefits for the next 75 years, giving them 10 years to do it.  That's almost $6 billion a year that they have to clear over the rest of their profits just to pay that off... and it's some trumped-up, completely-unfair bullshit that's not required of any other federal agency or business in this country.  It's a concentrated effort on the part of the right-wing to create an artificial crisis to drive the post office out of business so it can be privatized.

And as soon as they take away our alternatives, the already-incredibly-expensive-and-shitty UPS and FedEX will jack their prices sky-high.

I fucking HATE UPS and Fed-Ex.  I will not use them if I am given any other alternative.  I've got nothing against their delivery people - I deal with several of 'em on a daily basis and they're cool - but the business itself is lousy.

The United States Postal Service is much better - I get a PO box so my mail isn't left out all day and subject to thieves and being ruined by weather, I get much better service when I want to mail something, they're much more helpful in tracking packages.

The Post Office employs 8 million people, 40% women, 40% minorities, and 22% veterans, and they're unionized -- another reason the right-wing hates them.

Here, read something other than Wikipedia:  http://about.usps.com/...

The U.S. Postal Service is the core of the trillion dollar mailing industry that employs more than 8 million people.

        •  Sorry, that simply doesn't pass the smell test (0+ / 0-)

That would mean it employed about 5 percent of the American labor force.

You're still thinking small and literal.  Think bigger.  If they go down, a lot of businesses connected to them go down.

Hell, one business that'll suffer a lot from the loss of the post office is the fucking UPS and FedEx.  Did you know that they actually ship a lot of their stuff with the US mail?  True.

we want to see the end of the USPS. And I agree that pre-funding pensions is an idiotic requirement.

But I think looking at the end of Saturday delivery-- a logical cost-saving measure for a shrinking industry-- and reading into that "this is the end" is hyperbolic. And I think that quoting numbers like "8 million employees" does nothing to make people think you're being anything other than hyperbolic. If your goal is to wave your arms around and convince people on the fringe that the sky is falling, but all means, continue.

If your goal is to actually do something to effect change: I'm pro-labor, pro-government, pro-union. I'm the sort of person who should be sympathetic to your message. And I'm finding your messaging hyperbolic and unconvincing. How do you think it will play to a larger audience that isn't left-leaning?

    •  True Dat (0+ / 0-)

What company funds retirement benefits for people that haven't even been born yet, much less hired by that company? For the USPS, the combination of not being able to raise prices while having to comply with idiot mandates like this is a sure recipe for bankruptcy.

But the 75-year retirement fund requirement is not just about destroying the USPS, folks! It also creates an enormous pot of money that will end up in the pockets of the GOP donors running whatever non-governmental entity that replaces the USPS. No retired employee will see a dime of it if the GOP has its way. Straight out of the Bain Capital playbook.
