are all atheists! It's something I'm struggling with, actually: how to connect with the Torah without all of the God-as-entity stuff (I think the literalism is a remnant of my past).

    •  Jews do not really care what you believe so much (3+ / 0-)

as you are a Jew.  It's very hard for people from faith based religions to get their heads around.

And we sail and we sail and we never see land, just the rum in the bottle and a pipe in my hand...

    •  I was raised Lutheran (NOT MO Synod!), married... (8+ / 0-)

... Congregational, attended Episcopalian (lower, not High) and have a daughter who is a Unitarian Universalist minister. (UU's attract, if that is not to light a word, hosts of disaffected believers from other religions. Even atheists and agnostics. In fact, UU's welcome them!)

A few of my best and longest-standing friends are Jews. I think I have learned a lot - casually - about Judaism and although it's not for me, it has important lessons for how to behave and - in my expansive view of where religion should take us - how to act like a Christian, conscious of the community around me and my family and how important each of us is to it and we to the community.

The idea that a Lutheran pastor is censured for presiding in an ecumenical service respecting a six-year-old Jew and his family? There's a word for that all right. It is not faith, but anathema.
As my daughter and others have preached, we may not be our brother's keeper, but we are our brother's brother.

2014 IS COMING. Build up the Senate. Win back the House : 17 seats. Plus!
