    Judea in the 1st century was hardly a homogenous society.  I'm not going to argue further on that.  My exact point was that historical accident is just as good an explanation for the dominance of religions descended from Judaism, including both Christianity and Islam, as the obscene belief that God favors them.  Christianity caught on because one charismatic individual happened to be preaching at the exact time the Romans succeeded in conquering the entire Mediterranean world. Had the Byzantines (Christian) and the Persians (Zoroastrian) not exhausted themselves in a horrible war in 620 CE, Islam would have never conquered what it did. God's will or historical accident? My vote is for historical accident. And I'm in Iraq now. Yezidis are not yet extinct.  Nor are Iraq's Christians. Far from it.
