and everything to do with the dogma of the Lutheran Synod.  The Synod does not allow its ministers or its laity to participate in ecumenical or interfaith activities. We must remember that the Lutheran Church was born from disagreements with the Catholic Church - not so much about doctrine or the power of the Church, but to whom the German principalities owed their allegiance. This is an ancient interdiction that the Synod maintains. I don't like it - and I wish the Lutheran pastors would stand up to the Synod. But if wishes were horses, then we'd have more crap to clean up.

...stand up to the Synod.  That would kick off another civil war that only the stupidest godbotherers that call themselves Steadfast or Confessional Lutherans in the LCMS would like to see.  Heck, Pastor Harrison's actions are pretty much meant to mollify those jackals in their never-ending battle with the liberals going by the name Jesus First.  In my mind the real underlying current of this all is that the LCMS is going through the exact same thing that the Republican Party is going through, writ small.  Their membership is propped up by an aging white German demographic and they are struggling with how to cope with their decline.  The Confessionals want to circle the wagons and armor themselves with doctrinal purity, and then complain that devil is behind why the world doesn't interpret their douchebaggery as love.  The Jesus First crowd is trying to patch a doctrine that has, after the first round of liberal purges in Seminex civil war of the early 70's, been turned into a pretty mean-spirited view of the world.  Don't believe me?  I'm sure you wouldn't have to look very hard to find some LCMS members, both pastors and laity, that think 12/14 was because prayer isn't allowed in schools.

There are so many "mini" schisms occurring and the Missouri Synod has its fair share.  To this day, non Lutherans are denied Communion in a Synod church - and even on the battlefield and mission fields.  It's very self-defeating for any denomination, any religion, to refuse to embrace interfaith alliances. But the Synod, as with too many denominations, like to believe that they have the direct line to God and are the sole arbiters of His Word.  As long as we have folks who want to believe they have the inside & exclusive track to salvation, then groups like the Synod will have a reason to exist. Ego.
