  •  We have a spring cleanup (8+ / 0-)

in our little rural Massachusetts town. Each April on a designated weekend around Earth Day we walk the roads and pick up trash, bringing it in our vehicles to a central point near the highway barn, where it's bagged and brought by other volunteers to the Transfer Station to be disposed of/collected/recycled. On that day we are not charged a fee for bags or a permit, as a reward for helping to keep the town clean.

We've stopped announcing when we're going to do it, opting instead to use a network of volunteers notified by phone tree.

Reason? Assholes like the ones you describe have decided that our efforts that constitute a free trash pickup especially for them, and deliberately choose that day to dump their appliances, plumbing fixtures, shingles, construction waste, etc. (and bags and bags of ordinary household trash) on the road where we'll find it, so they won't have to fork over a Transfer Station fee like they would if they brought it by themselves--after all, these do-gooder volunteers will do it for them!

Mind you, this isn't Louisiana or Texas--it's in the People's Republic of Massachusetts, home of the DFHs.

If someone is skeptical that our state is not just made up of Greater Boston, the Five-College area and Cambridge, that redneck idiots who thumb their noses at us "politically-correct tree huggers" live here too, there's the proof.

I guess the people around here aren't that motivated or organized to spam us with extra trash.

The funny thing is... the extra gas they pay to go there to dump things, assuming they do it on purpose, is probably more than the dump fees, in our case anyway.

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!
