there is NO trash pickup by the county, EVER if you live out of Ithaca. I pay a private hauler for house trash, monthly plus by-the-bag. Christmas tree pickup? Not. Sofas, large stuff?. Nada. How am I supposed to fit a dead sofa in a Honda Accord?

I am unhappy with the situation, but with more snow today, stuff disappears for a while. And I am not poor, but there are a few items in my yard that are embarrassing. A bike rack, some wheel covers and a 30 year-old bundle of shingles.

Same thing true in Ontario where I own a cottage. Garbage bags can be thrown in the abandoned quarry, and other items packaged to be dumped/recycled off-site. but I have disposed of two refrigerators that I had to pay for, plus the pickup to take them away to eventually get the CFCs out (I hope).

will come to collect your old appliances and cars. They might even pay you for them too.

I don't know what to do about the sofa. I suppose pull the cloth and foam off and bag it, burn the wood and recycle the springs.

for extra money. One took an old dryer out of my basement and got $25 for it. Why pay when you can make money?

I am not going to guess whether it's a good one or not, BUT...

Perhaps we could make flyers, and post them at libraries, or on Kiosks at these hiking/camping areas telling people they can get money for some kinds of junk, and perhaps some addresses to any close recycling centers?

25 or 50 Bucks is almost a tank of gas, a small bag of groceries, etc.,

I know some people do it just to be shitty, but then again, some might not know that such options exist.

I would also include the number for donation pickups for clothes, and furniture.

to organize a yearly trash pick up?  You hire your own truck or hauling company.  It would take some organizing and maybe you could get a subsidy from an environmental group.  I'm not saying it would be easy, but if you and enough others thought it worthwhile, well, then maybe it would work.
