I vote in every election. Those low turnout primaries when maybe 8% of the electorate shows up? I’m there. Those are the elections where the nutjobs try to gain a foothold because not many people are watching.

Example #1: Michelle Bachmann got her start in politics running for school board. She didn’t win that one but it got her enough visibility to make a run for State Senate viable, which she did win, which she parlayed into her current House seat.

You are also wise to mention keeping an eye on are judicial elections. They are just as much a magnet for religious wackos as the school board elections. If anything, the wacko judicial candidates are even farther out there.

Average people have an awareness of their school board, so it’s harder to infiltrate by the nuts. People don’t have the same contact with the State Court of Appeals, district judge, or what have you. Thankfully, I live in a state where extremist judicial candidates have not had any success. Nonetheless, it’s pretty frightening to see someone who is basically a right-wing Christian ayatollah get 35% or 40% of the vote.

in the 1970s and 1980s -- run their people for school board, city councils, county supervisors...not only did they get the experience in running for office, they built the connections necessary for higher office. So by the 1990s-2000s, we're stuck with them in state legislatures and in Congress.

The key is looking for the code words and "dog whistles" that can reveal a candidate's true leanings.
