  •  Nah. Moses didn't explicitly outlaw spermicide. (6+ / 0-)

The 'sin of Onan' was mostly the failure to give his sister-in-law children in the name of his deceased older brother.  And I don't believe it wasn't any law enforcement that called him out but the Lord God who took care of Onan.

Imagine if we'd just leave enforcement of archaic Mosaic Law up to God, and the following of it up to those who want to (except where inhumane), then perhaps we'd all be better off.

It wasn't until science established how human reproduction actually worked that people could even imagine arguing that human life began at conception.  Prior to that change in understanding, a fetus was understood as the result of the man's 'seed' being implanted and taking form, as the 'fruit' of the womb.

For most of the history of the Church, the understanding was the human soul entered a child at the child's first breath. Breath is the root concept of the Hebrew word for soul and the Greek (and Latin) for spirit. Recall Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit upon his 12 Disciples and that it came like a Rushing Wind at Pentecost upon 500 witnesses to Jesus's Gospel. Life, the animus, is the pulse of blood and respiration of breath. Until birth, the child is dependent upon and lives off the breath, the soul & spirit of the woman. It was sad to lose the fetus before birth, but it wasn't equated with the loss of a human being in whom a soul was instantiated by God, in God's image.
