  •  I agree with this (3+ / 0-)

but I have encountered, in my life, too many people who don't have that attitude and who sort of look down on people who don't have an extensive background in poetry, literature, etc.  I've spent so much of my life and education in the sciences and technology that there was not always much time for fine arts, relatively.  I've always been an avid reader too, but for enjoyment, not for study.

other people's enjoyment and understanding of art.

your subjective experience of an artwork is never wrong.  everyone who interacts with an artwork brings their own experience, preconceptions and expectations to the experience.  everyone's experience is different, everyone's experience is valid for themselves.  surely there are ways to enrich the depth of your appreciation and expand the number and type of impressions, feelings and suggestions that an artwork may evoke.  but each person gets from an artwork at least what they bring to it and hopefully the interaction produces for them something that they had not perceived previously and adds to the body of their understanding of the world and themselves.

ignore those people and enjoy yourself.
