  •  Lisa is Independent as Hell.... (5+ / 0-)

...she took on Sarah Palin, was primaried, then ran as an Independent, beat Sarah's boy, and held on to her Senate seat. She won - in some measure - because of very strong support from Alaska's indigenous people. They feel like they put her back in the Senate. Now, she is fighting for them. (She may also be fighting for big oil, but she always does that.)

I was totally bummed out when her Dad first gave her that Senate seat, but I've been surprised that she's been a damned good Senator. I disagree with her more than I agree with her, but she is diligent, hires well, and treats her staff and her committee staff well. That's more than I can say for many - if not most - Congresscritters.

Folks, this is Alaska we're talking about. It is bigger and more remote than anything you have ever seen. It lives and dies on the taking of natural resources. Without the taking of those resources - and without federally-funded infrastructure, the poverty there would be indescribable, especially among Native Americans. And, like it or not, we need those resources here in the Lower 48.

There are next to no roads in most of the state and you need to fly to get around. Ask their other Senator - Mark  Begich - about flying in winter up there. It made him an orphan at a young age. The risks are very real.

I'm with Meteor. I'm conflicted. But I have a soft spot in my heart for Lisa, because she had one giant catfight with the Wasilla Snowbilly. And Lisa Murkowski was the one left standing. She and Begich are as good as we will ever get from Alaska.
