By 4-wheelers you mean all-terrain or off-road vehicles? I think that's part of the reason people want the road.

I can say I almost went to Alaska. I friend offered me a cruise and I took up the offer. We visited 3 Alaska places, Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway. But a cruise ship of 2.000-3,000 people changes every place it goes. And there were always other cruse ships in the harbors we visited. I had a few moments trying to imagine what it would be like to live there. We took local buses in the different places instead of tour buses. The bus drivers and locals were only too happy to talk about their towns.

and you see some amazing things on those ships. I hitchhiked up twice, once from Oregon - and once from NY (made it in 8 days, or 500 miles a day, not bad hitchin'!), and took a seiner up from Seattle once. That trip from Seattle to Ketchikan (I assume that's what you took), is just dynamite.

Yeah, the off-road fat-wheeled four-wheelers. They are ubiquitous in rural Alaska, and yes, because of the lack of roads.
