As the immortal Paul Newman said in his role as Butch Cassidy, "There ain't no rules in a knife fight."  Consider as well that if he actually felt personally injured, that phone call would have been private and off the record.  It was not, which tells us that what he felt was a political injury.  And so the announcement of the call is yet another bullying tactic to take the issue away - a warning shot.  Will it work?  I hope not, but time will tell.

As to his children's sensitive ears, what is good for the goose, is good for the gander.  He should get all the consideration he gives - which is so little as to be undetectable.  This is about politics, an arena in which I do not wish him well without wishing him an early death.  He brought his kids into it in both the broader sense and in this particular contretemps.

Finally, no one should be under the impression that if we operate with an eye to Governor Christie's feelings, he will reciprocate.  That is not how Republicans operate, and that certainly is not how Cristie operates.  He has done as much as anyone to create the environment in which smash mouth politics dominates.  For that sort of politician, opponents offering to give him quarter are seen as weak, a target for increased attacks.
