  •  I think Robert's uselessness is the point (9+ / 0-)

    He is worse than useless; he is actively bad at management. Letting Downton decay is the least of it; he also lost two fortunes and killed his daughter.

    I think Robert stands as an example of how the aristocracy thought they were necessary, even while they weren't. Robert is only beginning to grasp that if reward followed ability, he'd be a day laborer. I think it's JF way of indicting the entire system.

      Downton's clearly not a meritocracy. What bothers me about Robert isn't so much his lack of ability. After all, nobody can be an expert on everything from animal husbandry to selecting the right after-dinner drink or cigar. It's his lack of interest, his sense that it's all just too tedious, that makes me scream at him.

      Those who do not understand history are condemned to repeat it... in summer school.
