I adore "Downton Abbey"! There are just two TV programs I can watch without once glancing at the novel in my lap--I always have a novel in my lap when I'm watching TV, as I find them generally much better than what's on the screen--"Downton" and "Call the Midwife."

The original "Upstairs, Downstairs" was very good, I agree.  The remake sucks galaxies through a straw.  When there's not even one likable character, I lose interest.

I wouldn't want the world to still be like Downton Abbey in its heyday.  Lady Mary and Lady Edith have nothing to do, now the war's over.  That's their chief problem--nothing to do. Matthew is the only character besides the chauffeur who has any conception of what life is like in the real world.

Nowadays Lady Mary would be running some thriving corporation and Lady Sybil would be directing a peace mission in Africa.  The female servants would have houses of their own with faithful mechanical servants such as dishwashers, microwaves, and washers to do the drudge work. Carson would be the manager of a grocery store, Daisy would be happily breeding horses, and Cora would be managing the Chelsea Flower Show.  The Duke would sit on 10 or 12 boards and spend the rest of his time in his clubs.

I enjoy looking at dinosaurs.  And however snobbish the upper clawses may be in this soap opera, I MAJORLY prefer it to the sleaze, sex, and profanity of present-day American sitcoms!
