  •  I've often thought (5+ / 0-)

similar things when I've heard about some of the discoveries on Mars. The pictures alone are truly amazing.

I imagine that NASA's budget has been trimmed to such an extent that "hype" just isn't possible no matter how exciting the material.

Also - it might interfere with the idea that the earth is the centre of the universe and only 6000 years old. We can't have discoveries from Mars upsetting that apple cart.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy... the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

    •  Hype is what kept NASA's budget as high (0+ / 0-)

as it was for years.  Now they seem steeped in secrecy and avoid putting out information much as the rest of the government.

    •  APOD had an amazing Mars shot (2+ / 0-)

      the other day.

Download the full-res one, open it all the way wide, go to the right-side edge, then back one full screen.

There's a "black cat" sitting in front of "the Welcome Center," a half-screen to the left of the gold-colored do-dad on the rover.

That's the daily page with commentary.

The full-res monster shot. You get the funny stuff, but also a clue to what this mountain climbing expedition is up against. The big-ass thing in the center that you can't see is the mountain.

As a guess "the Welcome Center" of black rock might be worth a side trip.
