  •  I think all lawmakers who want people on (8+ / 0-)

food stamps or welfare to pee in a cup should face the same indignation.  I was on food stamps for nearly a year, and was thankful that my son and I were able to eat because of it.  I can't imagine if peeing in a cup was required before we could eat.  These people ("those people?") have no shame - none.  I'm so sick of Republicans I could scream.  Hopefully those on the right come out of their Fox and Rush induced trances long enough to catch on to this crap.  That's a lot of hope.

    •  Make people on Food Stamps... (0+ / 0-)

      ....get drug tested.

Same with other forms of welfare.

Why? Because it helps keep popular support for the food stamp program. Nobody likes to think that their taxes are going to keep some pothead supplied with free pizza. Even if this stereotype is untrue, the fact that people believe it makes food stamps more difficult to  politically defend.

So take it off the table. Require drug tests, and the meme of the lazy loafer on government benefits goes away.

I don't think this should be done with Unemployment Insurance, though. To get UI, you had to pay into the system. But Food Stamps, Section 8, and other need based benefits? Get tested.

Requiring tests for Gun Permits also makes sense. I'm shocked this isn't done already.

Lastly, I like the Diarists idea of requiring tests for "white-collar" benefits. Here are my need a drug test to:

      - Form a corporation
      - Become an officer of a corporation
      - Become a stockbroker, analyst, or prop trader
      - Working for any corporation that owns a Broadcast License
      - Own more the 2% of the shares of any corporation
The only problem with drug tests is the possibility of false positives. We need to have a re-testing/appeals process in place for such situations.

Look, if people want to legalize drugs, that's a different conversation. Maybe it's something that needs looked into. But for now, drugs are illegal. This means their use should be discouraged.
