  •  That means it's not a DOC church either (1+ / 0-)

the first split between the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the independent Christian Churches was after the civil war over whether it was okay for churches to have instruments -- particularly a church organ.

The First Christian Church in my town was founded by Alexander Campbell. It does not permit the use of musical instruments in worship. All music is vocal and a capella.
The branch that stayed Christian Church (DOC) said the use of instruments, including the organ was fine. -- These were mostly northern churches.

the churches that left over that stance were mostly southern churches.  The split was exacerbated by the fact that in the lead up to the war and during the war dialogue over this issue was happening in regional journals being published by different Disciples.  The journals people read in the north took the conversation on way.  The journals people read in the south took the conversation another way, and after the war they were in such completely different positions on the issue because of the separate conversations, that the split was inevitable as agreement was impossible.  And this had become a point on which congregations wanted agreement instead of being a place where they could agree to disagree.
