The gun industry is a lot like the tobacco industry: both sell death as a way of making huge profits.

Both industries justify their making a profit from the death of Americans by claiming freedom and liberty.

Both the gun and the tobacco industries protect their profits of death by getting their devoted customers to compain and shriek about loss of freedom and liberty.  Those devoted customers are eager to do the bidding of the mercahnts of death, even as those customers spend their own money and suffer the health consequences of using the deadly products.

Research showed that cigarettes kill not only the user, but also people around the user.  Research shows that guns kill the gun owner, and also people who have the misfortune of being around the gun owner.

This is where the similarities end.  The gun industry used their money and the influence that money gives them in congress to get congress to defund and prevent further research into the deadly side effects of gun ownership.

The gun industry also used their influence to get congress to pass legislation outlawing civil suits against the gun industry - the kind of suits that forced the tobacco industry to reveal publicly the extent of the tobacco industries' lies to the public about the deadly health consequences of using their products.

Interestingly, many in the fast-food industry now also seek similar legislation protecting them from lawsuits from customers who suffer the health consequences of a constant diet of fatty and sugary foods.

Please, please, please kill anyone you want but make sure that it is not children (or at least large groups of children) as this makes it much harder to de-humanize the victims and makes our profit-taking harder to justify.
Or at least I imagine something like that.

Then they came for me - and by that time there was nobody left to speak up.

      •  With adults, you can claim they are criminals (2+ / 0-)

At least when you shoot adults, you can say you were feeling threatened and invoke the "standing my ground" rule.

It's a tougher sell when the person you shoot is a white six-year old.
