    ... is the shooting.

Old fart retiring, possibly because he's been warned about dementia setting in (and/or other health issues no one knows about yet), does not make for an interesting story, even if he is the "leader" of a world-wide religion that protects pedophiles as well as rapists (of children, women, whomever), preaches misogyny, and would rather people be ignorant (the more uneducated, the better) so they're dumb enough to follow church dictates without questions and feed the coffers of the church to keep them the richest landowners in the world.  He is the head of the one religion that is responsible for many wife beatings past and present, even rules about it (a man could beat up his wife all he wanted; he just couldn't kill her or hit her with a stick bigger around than his largest finger, or some such), the church that is responsible for more war deaths in the name of religion than any other throughout history, the church that has preached a doctrine of prejudice and hatred of Jews, Muslims, and other minorities and even appeased Hitler, etc., and the one religion most apt to meddle in politics for the last two thousand years.  Unfortunately, they're also the richest criminal organization in the world and they also own huge numbers of famous art works by various artists throughout history.

The latter (owning the famous art, being a patron of the arts) - which could be said to be 'good' on some level - is overshadowed by the numbers of people killed in the name of their religion and their unrelenting misogyny and protection of criminals within their ranks, as well as the doctrine of enforced ignorance and absolute obedience to religious authority, even when a country is not all-Catholic.

There are days I sympathize with Henry II Plantagenet and could paraphrase him with "Will no one rid us of these meddlesome priests?!?"

Of course, to do that without resorting to state-sanctioned murder means we'd need an educated and enlightened populace.... (and since our own "leaders" now approve of targeted killings or drone killings on the say-so of just one man, it doesn't look like our elected leaders would advocate reasonable sanctions against imposed religious belief brought about by meddlesome religious men who also preach misogyny, murder, and mayhem while protecting criminals).

I'm sick of attempts to steer this nation from principles evolved in The Age of Reason to hallucinations derived from illiterate herdsmen. ~ Crashing Vor
