    of discussion back in the day when Stanford was making their change. You had the old-line alumni who felt part of their heritage was being ripped from them against those who saw the name (and more important, the mascot) for what it was -- ridiculing a culture that is still thriving. (Don't see that many "miner 49ers" around these days, and the only Trojans in common existence are on the shelves at the local drugstore.)

      to go to a high school with The Trojans for their team name.

      Occasionally, my high school played his. We made their lives hell.

      We also made the lives of the teachers who had to check the official spirit signs for basic inoffensiveness sheer hell.
