  •  Not a good idea. (0+ / 0-)

When poverty goes up, it is because more people are unemployed.

How does raising the Minimum Wage help an unemployed man?  Nobody will hire him at $7/ do you expect him to find a job that pays $8/hr?

    •  Because they need a new employee (2+ / 0-)

to do more work.  Unemployment isn't as high as it is because companies don't want to pay more for employees, it's because they don't need more people to do work.

    •  Your "reasoning" is too simplistic. (4+ / 0-)

A higher minimum wage does more -- much more -- for the economy than it does simply for the worker who is paid that wage. It's the multiplier effect. That minimum wage worker spends essentially all of his raise. This increases net consumer demand. More demand means more production to satisfy it, which means more jobs. Prosperity for the middle class breeds more prosperity.

Your view logically leads to every worker being paid just enough to survive, but not enough to thrive. Granted, this situation would be best for you, personally. Why should you pay an extra dollar to a worker who will just blow it all on things like rent, food, clothing, education, consumer goods, etc? Surely, it's better for you personally to keep that dollar for yourself.

But the question is this: What is best for the rest of the country?
