    that he's not being filibustered for being incompetent or not inspiring confidence, right?

    I'm no happier with this nomination than you probably are,  but our opinion is not the one that counts here. It's the opinion of McConnell and his caucus, who dislike Hagel personally, and whose top priority is always to make Obama look bad.

    If Hagel's nomination actually fails, do you really think the next nominee will be someone we like better than Hagel, or someone McConnell likes better than Hagel? I bet he'd be very happy with a Democratic senator from a swing state.

      the Republican party (as they see it).  It would be the equivalent of a Republican president nominating Holy Joe Lieberman for the Defense Secretary, not that Republicans would ever nominate anyone who was not a steadfast and strong Republican for anything.

        But since the reasons for the filibuster have nothing to do with Democrats' objections to him, we should be prepared for them to stop obstructing this appointment only when Obama nominates someone we like even less, whether for policy reasons or, as I suggested above, for political reasons.
