    that a meteor explosion would not have caused a missile launch during the Cold War. A single explosion, no deaths, no buildings on fire, no evidence of a launch from the US or a submarine; those facts should have been enough to keep itchy fingers off the nuclear trigger.

    There were some close calls during the Cold War, as you mention. We are all fortunate to have gone through that era without any type of nuclear exchange.
