    the government should not be in the "marriage" business.

    From a legal standpoint, IMO, the government should only be issuing "civil union" licenses.

    Let the bigots have their "marriages" through the church—as long as every pair of adults who want to enter into a domestic partnership/civil union/whatever gets treated equally by the government.

      There is no common definition for "civil union", nor does it have the same social respect.  Most jurisdictions don't even have or recognize "civil union".  A couple should not have to say they are "civil unioned" just to please bigots.

      If the bigots don't like sharing the word marriage, then let them make the sacrifice and come up with their own word for their religious relationship.  As far as the law goes though, the word marriage fits all civil marriages.
