    If he were costing his employers as much as this diary seems to imply, Clear Channel would order him to change his tone, at the least.

    If you still hear stations promoting Limbaugh on the air, as KOA in Denvar does ("home of the Buffs and Rush Limbaugh"), that indicates that station management thinks he is helping them reach the station's target audience.

    Rush Limbaugh is one of the few shows that actually demands cash from subscribing stations; most talk shows can be had by stations on a "barter" basis, i.e. we give you the show free, but you have to run our ads for free in exchange.

    The statistic to watch isn't how many advertisers "leave", but how many stations choose to carry the show.

    So: how many stations have dropped Rush Limbaugh in the past year? How many others have picked him up?

    Here in Boston, Clear Channel's WXKS AM 1200 dropped Limbaugh and switched to comedy, but Entercom's WRKO AM 680 immediately picked him up. That suggests he is still viable in Boston.

      Station Management doesn't make that choice anymore. Clear Channel does.

      They demand cookie cutter--hence, all the bumpers of "Home of The (Sports Team Name) and Rush Limbaugh!". It's a requirement.

      The only "target demographic" here is a gullible uneducated one. That's what Clear Channel's goal is. Corporate hegemony driving hate, racism, sexism and bigotry at a loud enough volume to convince the uneducated to hate on those who doesn't like Their Personal Hero.

      Divide and conquer is the goal here. Where've you been?

        Both Clear Channel and the stations who pay it for the rights to broadcast Limbaugh's show are for-profit businesses. They don't care about hate, bigotry, or whatever except as a means to an end, and that end is profit. If Limbaugh's show ever ceases to bring in advertising money, it will be dropped, as Clear Channel's Boston station dropped it last year.

          Sure they care about hate and bigotry--if it profits for them, that's a bonus, you see. The idea is to divide and conquer.

          There's a means to an end, though, I will grant you that. I think we just disagree on what that is. IMO, it's called Rush Limbaugh. As long as he remains divisive, Clear Channel will keep him on the air.

          So you're saying Rush isn't anywhere to be had on the Boston area airwaves, then? Because Clear Channel owns way more than one outlet. There and everywhere else...
