  •  It's a cost argument not a first amendment one (0+ / 0-)

Rush gets to do what he's doing.  It sucks and we know it, and the real problem is those funding it really don't know how much he costs.

When we raise the cost of his speech, it becomes less worth it to carry his speech.

Truth is, you can put him on a stick anywhere in the nation, air that garbage and racists, bigots, theocrats, etc... can and will listen because he validates them into "just another opinion" instead of the discriminators they are.

Doing that is worth a lot!  They get somewhat normalized which relives them from a lot of social pressure to grow the hell up and play well with the rest of the kids, and because of that they write the letter, listen to the program, make the phone call, buy the product and cast the vote.

Because there are always these people, airing Limbaugh is kind of a sure thing.  They are some of the most loyal media consumers there are.

If we raise the cost of that, the margins go down and it gets a lot harder to justify serving those people.

The answer to offensive free speech is more free speech!

Asking sponsors whether or not his speech reflects the values they want associated with their corporate brand is perfectly fine free speech.

The impact on Limbaugh will be diminished stature, which is good.  Most notably, he's not being silenced, just marginalized, and those are very different things.

Nobody has to carry that garbage.  They do it because it makes money.  If it doesn't make so much money, they won't do it or will do it a lot less.

Personally, I think using the public airwaves for such foul things should be quite expensive!  The more it costs the better.

Limbaugh can move to subscription programming where those racists, bigots and theocrats can pay for his validation and get all they can eat.

Right now, airing it on public airwaves costs people.  The targets of that discrimination suffer worse lives and there are a lot of those targets and their suffering isn't easy to measure, but it adds up to a lot of dollars.

Stop Rush is using the First Amendment perfectly IMHO.

Limbaugh frames it as a First Amendment argument because that's a great distraction and nobody wants to see censorship take hold and so they lean his way.

IMHO, it's totally worth it to be very careful not to elevate the First Amendment argument at all.  He gets to do it, but the question isn't whether or not he gets to do it, but whether or not it's worth it.

If we can beat him up on the worth question, he goes to subscription media where he's marginalized away from the popular discourse, and we aren't paying for all of that with our quality of life as targets of the discrimination.
