  •  disagree - he IS the face of the GOP because he is (13+ / 0-)

point man for their most important media weapon against democracy and ignoring it the last 25 years is the main reason we're so fucked. the talk radio monopoly has been and will continue to minimize the work of citizen activists and their donations because it is loud and unchallenged.

the 'debt crisis' and benghazi are recent egs of why talk radio must not be ignored. continued global warming denial from those 1000+ radio stations makes it imperative for the left to challenge it. we don't have the time to keep ignoring it.

the talk radio monopoly not only makes hate, racism, and ignorance acceptable, it is their main tool sued to create the alternate reality they depend on to obstruct ANYTHING we want.

if progressives and dems get close to making progress on any major issue the RW  think tanks create PR campaigns and made-to-order constituencies to counter those popular reform efforts and then they launder them through their blowhards until they create enough 'popular' idiot consensus/reality to enable and intimidate politicians and media.  it makes rational fact-based discussion on a national scale impossible. they are successful in obstructing and short circuiting democracy because liberals and thinking americans give those radio stations/soapboxes and their professional liars a free speech free ride.

it is the loudest and most successful messaging tool in history because the coordinated lying is ignored and unchallenged by the left. in most states RW radio dominates politics and the left doesn't even know what they're saying or how often, so we regularly end up playing catch up.

limbaugh is the point man for that effort and enjoys a the protection of a monopoly- the left needs to do whatever it can to expose the RW blowhards and their lies, link them to the GOP, and end the monopoly that allows them to sell their lies.

    •  Well and cogently said! (7+ / 0-)

I've wondered where we would be today as a nation if we still had a Fairness in Broadcasting Law ("Fairness Doctrine," repealed under Reagan in 1987).

Imagine a USA without the constant lies and propaganda of Rush Limbaugh and his ilk.

Via searching for the exact date the Fairness Doctrine was repealed, I found this:

A Brief History of The Fairness Doctrine

      •  everything changed when reagan killed the Fairness (4+ / 0-)

Doctrine. his biggest contribution to the destruction of democracy.

        thanks for the links.

at this point i'm not sure a new one is desirable or possible, especially with all the folks on the left who think the talk radio monopoly and it's coordinated corporate propagandists are some expression of free speech.

but i do not think it can survive if our universities start looking for alternatives for their sports. if they can't piggyback our unis they will lose their dominance and once progressive radio hits 20% or more in the general US the RW liars will no longer have their immunity from facts and challenge.

First, I don't believe that right wing AM radio is recruiting new listeners.  Young people don't listen to this shit and any older person who wasn't sucked into the tea party bullshit in 2010 certainly isn't taking up right wing radio as a new hobby now.

I also get your point that they use the right wing puke funnel to create the environment for obstruction, but at this point, everyone knows what right wing radio is, and the people listening to it aren't going to support progress anyway.  Imagine if Limbaugh, Hannity, and the other gutterslime disappear tomorrow....are their listeners ever going to come around?  Personally, I think not.

Look, I'm aware of the role of right wing hate radio in disseminating talking points--and I don't disagree that we should respond to the bullshit and expose the lies.  I just think there are certain benefits to having the Most Unreasonable Person in the World as the face of the republican party.  We ran against Rush last cycle and we WON.  Why wouldn't we want to keep cramming it down their throats until they drive him off on their own?  Why would we want Rush replaced with someone who SOUNDS more reasonable, but with the same sociopathic message?  Better to have the light directly on the cockroach if you ask me.

on the foreheads of every republican politician and media hack and they'd go nowhere.

and they may be losing listeners but all they have to do is be loud enough to enable and intimidate politicians and media - and they will still be able to do that for years to come as long as we let them keep their monopoly. that power is especially evident in emergencies or major news events. and their ability to create fictions around something like benghazi is still strong enough for idiots like cruz and mccain and graham to repeat in hearing and on the floor. listen to some local RW blowhard call in shows to hear all the idiot fiction and myths they believe.

i just think the best way  to get after limbaugh is to give him the credit he deserves for not only personifying the morals and ideals of the GOP but also being the single guy most responsible for getting the  GOP to where they are today.

that's what happened when obama got in and told the senators they wouldn't get anything done if they listened to limbaugh- for 2 weeks or so limbaugh was coming up a lot and the GOP pols had to defend him in the media- the media kept bringing it up - it was great and dems should have learned.

the name limbaugh should be mentioned regularly by dem politicians but it isn't. "that's what limbaugh said" should be a regular retort from dems.

for eg he is the guy most responsible for selling the idiots on the idea that defaulting on the debt would be no big deal- he seemed to say that for months. he needs to get credit for his important part in sequestration.

if he makes money off it - no big deal. if he ends up on 50 stations in the south so much the better- that  would be a truer measure of his real marketability. but even if he's completely off the air the GOP will have him around their necks for decades.
