    No context -- many businesses have clauses about special reasons to pay out bonuses.   The bonus might normally require you to still be employed by the employer as of, let's say, 1 December to get the bonus for that year (paid the following April). It is not unusual - at senior levels of large Corporations -- to have an exception clause. A political appointment, appointment to a judgeship, military duty, etc ... are often explicitly laid out as reasons for exception to the bonus.
