    If that type of a wake-up call happened instead of mass destruction, I would welcome that too. It would better because at least we get to live!

     You just gave me an idea of a weird twist on that scenario. Imagine if humanity did what you said to deflect a moon-sized object and it was successful.

     Then suddenly...

     NASA: "Attention everyone! Congratulations on the recent effort to deflect the incoming NEO. Unfortunately an even larger object is headed this way. It will be here in 30 minutes. We've also used up all of our resources. Goodbye and good luck."

     Humanity: "Well... fuck."
