    of the threat to life that existed at the height of the bad ol' Cold War, when both we and the Soviets owned the capacity to kill every human being on the planet 400+ times over. That was utter madness, hence the term for it - MAD.

    A limited nuclear exchange - excluding Russia, the US, China and Western Europe (and possibly Israel) wouldn't necessarily entail the extinction of our species. It would make a big enough mess to set us back a ways, though.
