    In 1957 the Soviets were storing high grade waste about 150 Km northwest of Chelyabinsk. It was not going to blow up on its own, but it was hot. They kept it cool with with water, but did not bother to really watch it. The cooling system failed and they did not do anything. Once the water evaporated, a huge chemical explosion happened. It was basically an ammonium nitrate bomb with the force of 100 tons of TNT.

    It is ranked as the third worst nuclear disaster ever. The area was closed until 1994.
