  •  He means Iran is too large for us to take in a (8+ / 0-)

weekend like we did Panama or Grenada.  GOPers loves them their short quick wars

    •  There's no Iran War scenario that works. (10+ / 0-)

The military's been gaming this out for over 30 years, and it fails quickly because

      1. Iran's much bigger than Iraq
      2. Has a much more stable regime with (whether we like how it plays or not) more popular support than popular opposition
      3. The inevitability of damage to nearby countries and, more important to our thinking, their (read: "our") oil
      4. The minor detail that unlike Iraq, Iran can hit back - if they can send a satellite into space they can send a payload to any point on the planet more easily.
      5. The North Korea Example: If they actually have WMDs of any kind we're not going and that includes chemical weapons (and this is why we aren't intervening in Syria, either)
      6. Last but not least: Unlike Iraq, Iran has big powerful friends (see:Russia, China and to an extent even India) who, while not necessarily in a fight-the-USA mood, could make economic life (and therefore the cost of an Iran War) much greater

And the GOP loves wars they don't have to fight in or pay for.

As for Iran, they can defend themselves.  A war with Iran would be a disaster.

We need the military today "more than ever"
What we need is to clean house among the military brass.  Nearly 12 years in Afghanistan and no one can define victory.  Nearly 12 years in Afghanistan and we're still dicking around with a group of religious fanatics and tribal war lords.

If this doesn't say "military FAIL", I don't know what does.

      •  no VN era brass left on active duty I think (0+ / 0-)

That group has been completely cycled out along with many of their proteges.  We are the third generation removed from VN in terms of command

        •  The military is overburdened with officers (2+ / 0-)

Numbers from 2005 to 2010 numbers show that the total US armed forces + DoD + reserves has capped under 2.4 million, but during that time the total numbers of flag officers has gone over 1600 with under 500 properly accounted for in force structure.  The ratios of serving soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen to flag ranks has gone from ludicrous to ridiculous and it continues to skyrocket the costs of doing military business. Israel does with 2 cents what we do with a Buck 25.

However deep you want to go and look at it we are at least some three times overpopulated with generals and admirals. Now they have gravitated into their own political entity pointed towards post retirement jobs.  Do they really hold up any part of the system that actually defends the United States anymore or are they as totally biased by potential gains or perverted by deliberate incompetence as the rest of the military-industrial complex is?

There's quite a bit of info at that link.

        It says Administration Policy Fail!

"What we need is to clean house among the military brass.  Nearly 12 years in Afghanistan and no one can define victory.  Nearly 12 years in Afghanistan and we're still dicking around with a group of religious fanatics and tribal war lords.

If this doesn't say "military FAIL", I don't know what does."

This was a failure of the Bush Administration and specifically because they listened to the Neo-Con Advisiors, thereby screwing the pooch...

Make no mistake about it! We didn't win the Cold War! Afghanistan won it for us!

The USSR was a formidable adversary and a cause for concern on every front, whether it was tanks pouring through the Fulda Gap to invade Western Europe, a Soviet nuclear-powered attack submarine chasing the USS Enterprise at top speed across the Pacific Ocean or, ICBM's 15 minutes away from hitting us with a first strike...

Yet, the mighty USSR was brought to their knees in 9 years of fighting in Afghanistan, financially, in their will to go on fighting, and as a nation...

Who were these Neo-Con Imbeciles to think that our experience in Afghanistan would be any different if we opted for a full scale invasion of the country and installing a Puppet Regime? Much less who were these Neo-Con Imbeciles to even consider launching a 2nd "Un-Winnable War" while engaged in Afghanistan?

Just to finish Daddy's unfinished business that he wisely chose to leave unfinished at the end of the 1st Gulf War rather than plunge Iraq into decades of being a dysfunctional nation plagued by infighting among the many factions that don't play well together....

Of course this brings to light the Failed Policy of yet another Administration that created the terrorists operating out of Afghanistan by using them as Resistance Fighters in the Proxy War against the USSR then dropping them like a "Hot Potato" once it was "Mission Accomplished." No wonder there was so much hate!

We need to ensure that the people who are responsible for these failed policies are permanently removed from power in this country. We need to ensure that every leader in this country's future understands when it is acceptable to wage war, that there are clear and attainable goals before entering the war, and a strategy for ending the war, rather than sending our military around the world poking hornets nests with a stick. Making Enemies Faster Than We Can Kill Them!

"Do you realize the responsibility I carry?
I'm the only person standing between Richard Nixon and the White House."
