  •  He needs to retire (7+ / 0-)

He should have retired instead of running for Senate again.

I used to have a great deal of respect for him (back in 2000) and hated to see what Bush / Rove did to him during the campaign.

I never watch MTP or any of the other network talk shows on Sunday.

My weekend mornings are spent with UP and MHP.  A variety of interesting people talking about different topics from the week that was.  Helluvalot better than MTP.  And it seems to be a McCain / Graham free zone, so far.

I've written to MTP, FTN, TW and told them if they can't get somebody different to interview every Sunday they have lost all hope of getting me to watch them ever again.  They're boring and uncreative.  Maybe they appeal to my 86 year old Republican mother, but they sure don't appeal to anybody that isn't fossilized in their thinking and nearly fossilized in their bones.

My mother is currently angry that a bunch of people in her town have birth announcements and they are apparently unmarried couples.  I told her she doesn't know that for sure, a lot of women keep their own names for professional reasons, so if the paper says Joe Smith and Mary Doe are pleased to announce the birth of twins, it doesn't mean Joe & Mary aren't married.

I reminded her that her own grandaughter-in-law uses her maiden name for professional reasons.  My son and DIL are both Veterinarians.  It's a lot easier to not confuse people at the hospital by having two doctors with the same name - and she EARNED her DVM in her own name, why shouldn't she keep it?  She hyphenates for personal stuff, just like I do, but if they ever publish a birth announcement I'm sure it will be Dr. R.L. and Dr. J.W. (or maybe Dr. J.W-L. are pleased to announce... it's never going to be Mr. & Mrs. L.

For some reason, she now thinks my DIL is some kind of bitchy person who refuses to use my son's name (which is not the case at all).  There is no reasoning with her.  The world is going to hell because of "women not doing what they're supposed to do."  Really?  The world is going to hell because women want to keep their own names, sometimes?  It's not a law that you have to change your name!  It used to be customary, but not required.

I'm so sick of arguing with people of this mindset - McCain & Graham are the perfect reps for people like my mother.  I know time will resolve it, but in the meantime I just can't stand listening to these guys spout off nonsense on the TV every week, especially since they are reinforcing crazy rumors and "facts" for people like mom who are really low info citizens.

    •  They represent an age with a certain set of rulesq (0+ / 0-)

which have long since been abandoned as inappropriate, unnecessarily rigid, and not applicable in a modern age,

Nonetheless, they stamp their feet and loudly demand the rules be complied with, period.

Is "anachronistic" the right word?  Out-of-touch?  Nearing or passed "irrelevance?"

Like King Canute (or Cnute), trying to hold back the tide, they've already failed.  Their time is past.  They demand a world which simply won't be and perhaps never was.
