  •  I agree (9+ / 0-)

Ms  Madow asks if the US could again be fooled into war.  I think that we are in great danger of having a repeat because no one has been made to answer for the lies of the Iraq war.

The best prevention against future politicians leading us wrongly to war is to make sure past misdeeds are fully prosecuted and those responsible made to answer for their lies and crimes.  Sadly this has not been done.

Future politicans are likely to look back at the Iraq war, and the lesson they will learn is that there will be no consequences for those who falsely goad the nation into war.  Indeed, the Bush administration was rewarded with a second term.  Future politicians are likely to decide that lying about the need for war is a good way to get re-elected.

Pres. Obama has failed us and our children in this regard.  In refusing to prosecute the lies of the Bush administration, he has increased the likelihood that we will hear those lies again from another generation of politicians.

    •  No one followed up on any of our wars. (8+ / 0-)

This isn't a unique case.  No one knew how involved we were in Afghanistan during their war with the USSR.  We armed, trained and supported AQ and the Taliban, promised we'd be there for post-war rebuilding, and bailed.  We've undermined other governments for decades, mostly Cold War driven red scare paranoia.

      •  The irony: the US funded Bin Laden (7+ / 0-)

You are quite correct: one of the greatest ironies of the 9/11 attacks is that at one time the US funded Bin Laden and bought weapons for him.

Bin Laden returned the favor by later declaring war on the US.

      •  We also goaded the Soviets into it (6+ / 0-)

in order to give them their own Vietnam. That I think is the original sin of this era relative to US involvement in Afghanistan.

        •  The further sin is that the pundits (5+ / 0-)

and leaders forget that that war broke the Soviet Union.  Defense spending killed it off.  We've come really close to repeating their blindness.

            on us too.
There's very little this Nation is able to do anymore, including basic repairs to infrastructure, fully staffing our public schools, not to mention taking on efforts like providing pre-schools for our little ones, or building high-speed rail like other nations are now doing.
