    close. And there are plenty of ways to do that. Actually count people, like the diarist did. Estimates from aerial shots or general crowd footage, etc. (I realize not all of this is possible when an event is underway, rather than after the fact.)

    Miscounting is okay because there's no evidence it influences anyone? Sorry, but wrong data is wrong data, wherever it occurs. When we're trying to use the numbers for political purposes, it's reasonable to put some minor effort into it and not just say "oh, nobody cares if the numbers are right!" That's not a good mindset for pushing scientific views.
