affair with the poor of other, far-off places. Come to the City of San Buenaventura, California, Mr. Grayson. The town also known as Ventura, Ventucky and Bakersfield by the sea. On any day of the week I can introduce you to a sixty something black woman dressed in thrift store finery, selling pens on the street. On West Main Street, an area on the brink of gentrification, along with Ventura Avenue, that promises to create several thousand refugees in the name prosperity for those least in need of it.

    •  Have you ever been to the developing world? (6+ / 0-)

There are people living in conditions that you wouldn't believe. People living on less than $1/day.

There's no safety net. There's no unemployment.

If they get sick or hurt, they can't go to the emergency room and take their chances of getting service - they get better (often becoming permanently disabled) or die.

The idea that those people don't matter because they're not "American" is sickening to me and frankly I don't understand it.

Look at our military budget. We could help hundreds of millions of people in the developing world AND help people at home at the same time.

But hey, those people aren't American. So who cares right? I care, and a lot of other people on this site care.

When we stop putting leaders from the past up on pedestals and ignoring their flaws, we can start seeing our present leaders for what they really are.

you've never heard of, and I would like to see American tax dollars spent to alleviate the suffering of people here at home first, but we are in such incredible denial of the poverty we have created right here. We should be sending doctors and engineers and educators to the third world instead of Marines, and I care, Mr. Smarmy ass who cares.
