    Excellent discussions at Neven's sea ice blog regarding the varied of physics of multi-year vs. first year ice, especially in regard to stress, deformation and fracturing.

    And A-Team, a regular commenter over there, is becoming something of a Tycho Brahe of the cryosphere as he tracks patterns of leads as they form one set over another in the ice.  Lots of fascinating physics at play.  Sadly, the prognosis remains as grim as ever and new understandings only seem to point to ever swifter estimates of full exit and melt of the majority of the ice.
