    Somewhere I have a newspaper copy of the agreement from 1929 or thereabouts where the oil companies made an agreement about splitting up the oil fields.  Allegedly Kuwait still pays some portion of their oil money to those companies, as the area in which their nation was created sits over a portion of those oil fields. Americans own some portion of those companies, esp. Aramco, so perhaps some dollars do trickle down.

    Those fields were there for the development anytime...I think the powers of the oil oligarchy didn't want Saddam to be developing them, particularly Saudi Arabia. Now a weak, fractured state, Iraq is not in position to do much of anything to develop itself or defend from a takeover.
