  •  Rove's model (10+ / 0-)

was more like the PRI in Mexico between about 1950 and 1990.  That is tie all the elites into one compact bundle.  Use coercion and outright violence to prevent/ limit the development of alternatives to your ruling party.  Not a totalitarian state but an authoritarian one.

Of course, preventing the outbreak of a genuine populist conservatism would also be a part of the program.  Not that the Tea Party represents such a conservatism.

What's that rule again, the first one to call someone else a Nazi loses?

    •  The Tea Party might not be a populist movement (1+ / 0-)

But it feels like one to a bunch of people that slept in post-masturbatorial bliss through everything between Clinton's impeachment and the implosion of their retirement accounts.

So while it might not actually BE a genuine grassroots populist movement, all it needs is the right demagogue. They all seem to be rallying around Dr. Ben Carson these days, and, reading their forums, we should all be wetting ourselves that they've found their savior (again), a(nother) black man they can agree with.

      It's dangerously close.

      Atlas shrugged. Jesus wept.

      •  I don't actually see (0+ / 0-)

the Tea Party as having "legs."  Now that it has been exposed as a Koch brothers front, I imagine that their resources will be targeted elsewhere.  Oh joy, another astroturf organization.
