I've been railing about this very topic for a while now.  The GOP can survive only one way - if the party moderates win the GOP Civil War or if the party splits into two; one right and one moderate party.  I outline this in my e-book, The Fall of the Republican Party (pardon me as I shameless plug it - it can be found on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/...).

Personally, I'm thinking it'll be a party split but probably not before the 2016 election - it'll take one more Democrat win before the GOP rank-and-ile finally realize something is terribly wrong.

    •  I don't see it that way (0+ / 0-)

I see something like the Era of Good Feeling after the Federalists imploded, and the Democratic-Republicans had a permanent majority until they fractured, mostly into Whigs and Democrats. Later on, both of them fractured in the run-up to the Civil War, and we have had other realignments since.

So I am expecting to see a split between corporatist Democrats and Progressives, although those will not be their names. It is certain, however, that there will be a party of money and selfishness, and a party of human rights and sharing, whatever other issues they may fight over.
