about dubya, i have to admit that he wasn't hateful
    when it came to immigration.

He did have 6 years of a majority--when he could have
done something good and meaningful, and instead did
    JackShit--

but at least i'll give him this:  he wasn't his usual dick self.

On the other hand..... if he hadn't been such a total weenie,
immigration reform could have at least been moved
    somewhat a decade ago.

I guess he was too busy wagin' war, and stuff,
and also not doing anything about Roe v. Wade,
which he also campaigned on.  [thank God.]

He's an idiot, but not a bigot. It's too bad he did not push for commonsense immigration reform - he could have been an effective leader on this issue (perhaps no other) and cemented at least a bit of a legacy. But yeah, if your main priority is doing everything wrong in response to 9/11, there's not much time left for anything else.

Bush's wish for immigration reform.  It was more like Rubio's (no chance of citizenship) and planning for an immigrant underclass (call them "guest workers" if you want to sound charitable) on the lines of the Bracero Program, except that braceros had free movement back and forth across the southern border.  Bush's reform package did not include free movement and would have trapped immigrant workers in this country as a permanent underclass, exactly what the business community wanted done.
