  •  What are we going to make using the... (0+ / 0-)

    ...extra infrastructure?

What private sector goods and services are we going to sell that we couldn't before?

That's the real value of an infrastructure upgrade.

Infrastructure is a means to an end, it isn't an end in itself.

    •  There's a certain value in not falling into a (0+ / 0-)

river while driving to work.  Ask the people in Minneapolis.  There's a value in shorter commutes and fewer cars on the road when we build mass transit.

There's a value in a smart grid, and part of it has to do with being able to sell excess power to the power company if you're clever enough to have installed solar or wind adjuncts.

There's a value in not losing power for 5 days during storms.  There's a value in internet access for every citizen without huge data plan bills.

There's a value in building or retrofitting greener schools.

There's a value in creating jobs for people who are struggling in their nth month of unemployment.

It all kind of pulls together to help undo the notion that working together, and paying for our perks, is Not A Bad Thing and that it might be smart if we quit jonesing for $7 microwave ovens from China and start paying for the ones built in this country, with actual safety features.

There's the value in creating a sense of responsible citizenship and pushing back against the Dominionist arrogance that suffuses our public consciousness.

It's amazing what you can figure out about value if you leave the helpless hopeless useless mindset.

I'm not looking for a love that will lift me up and carry me away. A love that will stroll alongside and make a few amusing comments will suffice.
