  •  Kos, keep posting on immigration (19+ / 0-)

This issue matters a great deal to me; it's central to what I value about this country.

A few years ago, there was a huge rally in Chicago, about the time the Tea Party was starting up.  500,000 people marching in the street for comprehensive immigration reform, the entire center of the city packed from the Chicago River to Daley Plaza.  It was one of the most moving things I've ever seen.

People don't know what it is to be a refugee or an immigrant.  If they had more first-hand knowledge, they would appreciate this issue more.  One of the people who won asylum through our organization was an Angolan who escaped the war and drifted around the South Atlantic like Odysseus for a decade, from phosphate mines in Mauritania to Brazil to Guyana, eventually swimming ashore in Mobile Alabama and making his way to Chicago.  Twenty years later, his family is with him and his travels are over.  Nobody would guess his story, and now he's just another citizen.  There are literally millions of stories like this, and they make us who we are.

When I was in college in Germany, I watched a musical about xenophobia and discrimination. In it, a Turkish teenager challenges his German friend to disguise and live as a Turk for a week.

At some point in the play, the German teenager's grandmother breaks out in song and sings that in her youth she was a Polish refugee and faced the same challenges as her grandson's friend. Now, however, she is simply a German grandma, and no one thinks otherwise.

but another fantastic German video lampooning German racism:

Some background: "Schwarzfahrer" literally means "Black Rider" but is the term used to refer to someone who rides without buying a ticket, which carries a HUGE fine.

I knew right away the old woman would be caught without a ticket, but how that happened came as a surprise.

Btw, Neger is the equivalent of Negro, not the other n-word. Not that the woman wasn't offensive enough already.
