I come from a family of immigrants too.  Both my maternal grandparents immigrated from Sicily.  Both became citizens.  My grandfather spoke/read/wrote English, but my Nana only spoke broken English.

My father immigrated from Naples Italy.  He illegally jumped ship in Baltimore in 1945.  Yes, my father was an illegal immigrant.

When he was arrested by the FBI, he voluntarily returned to Italy in 1951.  He was already engaged to my mother.  She traveled to Italy in 1952 where they were married.  My father than entered the US legally New Years Eve 1952.

I'll have to go through my mother's papers to see if she has my father's naturalization certificate.

All my grandparents, Mom and Dad are gone now. This has been a very pleasant walk down memory lane.
