  •  I used to work for $11/hr (4+ / 0-)

    and works all kinds of crazy overtime I was never compensated for.  I never earned vacation, or sick time, or anything.  I never got breaks, NEVER, and if I had time to have a lunch break it happened once a week at most.  A lot of days I would arrive at 7am and work until 8pm, no breaks, no lunch, nothing.  And the whole time my employer treated me like garbage, said things to me that were entirely unappropriate, told me I was terrible at my job, etc.  I also had a company iPhone and was on call 24/7/365.  I was the only employee on call besides the boss/owner himself.  And he had all of the company's phone calls forward to me, at all times.  So even when I was on site for another customer doing a job, I still had to answer company phone calls.  It was hell, and I hated it--there was never a time to relax.  I missed a customer phone call once when I was in the grocery store because groceries are very loud and I just didn't hear it.  My boss called and chewed me out with a lot of inappropriate language and called me lazy, said if I didn't feel like answering calls I should forward the phone to him.  It wasn't a matter of being lazy, I just can't sit at home all day waiting for calls.  I was also similarly yelled at for missing calls while in the shower, while driving (oh and he would text me while I'm driving and if I didn't response within five minutes he would call and scream at me for ignoring him), while sleeping at 2am on a Saturday, because who does that?!

    I was there for a year when I got a job offer from the state government for 2x the pay and full benefits.  And normal hours.  I have a Blackberry for on-call shifts that I rotate with another guy but we hardly have anything to do.  Our agency's business is centered around the financial markets so business is M-F.  And my old boss went on and on about how overpaid I was going to be because I didn't have any skills, and what little I did have he taught me.  Which was crap because he never taught me anything, just threw me in the lake and said "swim."  And by the time I left I was one of the best employees he's ever had.  Huh, funny he said that after all of the abuse.  Oh and I never got my final paycheck from him.  Jerk.  I worked for this loser from Oct 2011 to Sep 2012 (a few days short of a year).

      So glad you found something better, but the next person would still have to deal with that pig. Why do the worst horrible people always get promoted to management.

        he owns the company so he promoted himself, I suppose.  He pays himself a huge salary and abuses company loopholes in the law (bought a "company car" that he uses as his personal car 24/7/365).  He couldn't keep employees at that company, I was just a stubborn ass who wouldn't quit until I found something better.  Oh and he had me sign a contract saying I could be fired if I discussed my compensation with other employees, which is illegal (and unenforceable, poor him).  He said it was to protect us employees from unions.

        Right.  Because unions are out to screw the little guy.  Suuuuure.
