  •  the economics of the new construction (16+ / 0-)

is what will ultimately doom nuke power.  It just takes too long to build, and the risks for financing and insuring such a project are simply not there.

The pro-nuke contingent are like a cargo cult.  They'll keep believing in a bright nuclear future, even as the one reactor after another gets shut down permanently.  Don't waste your time arguing with them.

We haven't constructed new nuclear power plants since the mid-1980s.  That was a time before personal computers and Excel spreadsheets.  Everything was done by hand and typewriter (literally).  Most of the engineers from that period have since retired.

(thought that didn't work out well for Japan), but it's true that the cost of new construction and the fact that industry tends to default on loans for such make building lots of new nuclear power plants unlikely. I remember once Lamar Alexander saying he wanted 100 new nuclear plants built in the next ten years (was a couple of years ago). I remember muttering to myself, "Where's the money going to come from, Senator?"

Can you imagine what it would take to build 10 new plants every year?

I don't know, I guess if you thought that was your only ticket out of catastrophic climate change, you might do it, but our government never would. Government spending, you know, is bad. We can't even get money for a basic jobs program.

    •  And we'll have "new data" from... (0+ / 0-)

...the predictable train wreck that will be the Vogtle Expansion. My prediction: double original costs and five years later than promised.
